Richard Holbrooke was The Colbert Report's standby diplomatic mediator for March 20, 2007.
Holbrooke stepped in to arbitrate the dispute between Stephen Colbert and Willie Nelson over their Ben & Jerry's ice creams. Holbrooke, suffering from a contact high he contracted while onboard Willie's tour bus, accused Stephen of being 'worse than Milosevic' for his treatment of Willie over the ice cream fued.
Declaring that "all negotiators carry their own spoons," and through a feat of diplomatic jujitsu, Ambassador Holbrooke persuaded each party to taste the other's ice cream. Willie reluctantly agreed to taste Stephen Colbert's AmeriCone Dream, but since it's Lent, at first Stephen said he had promised Jesus he wouldn't have sweets. With the Ambassador's further pressure, Stephen relented, on the condition that Willie go first.
Then in a spirit of goodwill and fellowship, Holbrooke sang On the Road Again with Willie and Stephen, while Bobby accompanied them on rhythm guitar.
