Maya Angelou is an author who claims to be both American and black. She does not, however, have many friends, therefore even if she is black (like she claims), she would never be a black friend, much less Stephen's black friend.
But she knew this would not get her into a college or pay for her tuition like all the black people on TV. So, Maya devised a story to tell college admissions officers that she had a rough childhood, knowing that it would impress guilt-ridden Affirmative Action boards. Most liberal arts colleges fell for the lie, but the colleges that make up the Holy Trifecta did not and would not admit the attention-starved wealthy, young Maya.
Angelou writes a lot about race, making her a fiction writer. She also writes poetry about caged birds and female genitalia, which is regularly forced upon unsuspecting college freshmen; her "art" is widely recognized as a gateway drug to feminism and pot-smoking, often at the same time.
