Mildred and her husband, Richard Loving, 1965.
The Lovings were arrested in 1958 and charged with violating the 1924 Racial Integrity Act, one of Virginia's anti-miscegenation laws.
They were sentenced to a year in jail but it was suspended on the condition that they leave Virginia and not return together for 25 years.
On June 12, 1967, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Virginia's anti-miscegenation laws were unconstitutional and the Lovings finally returned home to Virginia.
Richard was killed by a drunk driver in 1975. Mildred never remarried and died in 2008 of pneumonia, one month shy of what would have been their 50th wedding anniversary.
