Vermont Governor Jim Douglas holds a press conference following the passage of a gay marriage bill despite his veto, Montpelier, Vermont, 7 April, 2009.

The state Senate voted 23-5 to override and the state House voted 100-49 to override. Under Vermont law, two-thirds of each chamber had to vote to override the governor's veto. Vermont has become the fourth state to legalize gay marriage.
