Hundreds of thousands of public and private sector workers throughout France answered a call from the eight main trade unions to participate in the one-day walk-out. The nation-wide strike was held to try to persuade President Nicolas Sarkozy and business leaders to do more to help ordinary people overcome the economic crisis.
