On May 1, 2007, Stephen Colbert issued an apology to Mr. Feith for having allowed one of The Report's interns to incorrectly characterize Mr. Feith's involvement in the manipulation of intelligence information in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq. Former Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Feith complained about this error to National Public Radio, whose Steve Inskeep fortunately took the time to read Mr. Feith's written "correction" on the air:
Mr. Feith wrote us to say the Pentagon report did not say intelligence was "manipulated." Rather the Pentagon did find that Feith's office produce "alternative intelligence assessments in a manner that was ‘inappropriate’."
Stephen assured former Undersecretary Feith that the unpaid intern responsible for this mistake would be paid even less of no money as punishment.
