Rhythm and Blues is a musical style that originated in America. It is believed to have derived from jazz and the precursor to rock 'n roll.

R&B's roots can be traced to Blues & Jazz. The Blues started as chants used by slaves during the time of Slavery. Jazz influenced Blues and Jazz came out of Classical Music.

R&B has seen various different movements. It is supposed to embrace simplicity but some of todays R&B artists such as Mariah Carey are bringing in Bling and Hippity-hop and it is taking away from the genre's purity.
