[edit] It Started With A Dream
Here's how it went down:
Joseph Pulitzer, Hungarian immigrant, journalist, entrepreneur, Great American. Makes a lot of money. Decides to leave some of that dough to honor other Great Americans. Indicates that the Great Americans he would like his money to honor should be "Great American Writers." At first this meant that he would visit them personally and kick them in the nuts.
Great.
[edit] Examining the Pulitzer Legacy
Most of the honored writers are liberal, east-coast, Ivy-league intellectuals.
hmmmm... Did you ever get the feeling that maybe Joseph Pulitzer was not such a Great American, after all?
[edit] Pulitzer Controversy
Despite his obvious qualifications in many fields of endeavor, Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, D.F.A. has yet to receive a Pulitzer Prize. The Pulitzer Prize Board has not yet offered a satisfactory reason for their failure to recognize Dr. Colbert's contributions to the field of American letters. This reticence on Pulitzer's part stings all the more when one considers Dr. Colbert's heartfelt poetic paean to the Prize:
- Pulitzer
- Each night after I televise
- The soul of America cries:
- "This man named Colbert,
- He is firm but yet fair,
- Give him the Pulitzer Prize."
- by Stephen Colbert
[edit] Pulitzer Fails Again
The Pulitzer Prize selection committee made clear their desire to move against the surging currents of contemporary American literary waters with announcement of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize winners. Once again, no prize for Stephen Colbert or his groundbreaking documentary "Stephen Colbert's Hiphopketball: A Jazzebration". Once again, no prize... for America.
