Fort Sumter
· Had an armament of 135 guns and a garrison of 650 men.
· It is the entrance to Charleston Harbor
· The battle was the start of the civil war
· Was built 1829-60, on a shoal
· It was named after Gen. Thomas Sumter who was a revolutionary war hero from South Carolina

· It is a national monument
· And became one in 1948,which includes Fort Moultrie
· The passing of the Ordinance of Secession

· Was made to protect the Charles harbor
· Was built long before the civil war happened, But wasn’t finished until 1 year before it took place
· Was destroyed after the battle of fort Sumter
· Located on Morris island
· Constructed on an artificial island made from the sea shells and granite of northern quarries
· Forts Moultrie and Johnson, and Castle Pinckney, virtually surrounded it
· A pentagonal structure, fifty feet high, with walls eight to twelve feet thick.
