Cast (noun)

1. a medical device used to aid in the healing of broken bones. Made of plaster^[1], casts become hard making them conducive to the American tradition of "signing" a cast. After any surgery, a cast is put over the joint or area containing the broken bone as a quasi-exoskeleton to allow the bone to heal and to prevent further breakage. Once the bone is given sufficient time to heal, the cast is removed.^[2]
